PLANTINGS

a.k.a. establishments

It has been our privilege over the years to partner with our clients in adding to the local tree canopy.

We often plant to replace a removed specimen, to create an urban screen, or to add species diversity.  We welcome planting projects big and small.

Our primary planting season runs from February through early April. All plantings carry a one-year planting warranty which includes free health checks and the implementation of related planting prescriptions.

The holy planting trifecta: species, place, and timing

Establishments require a considerable investment of resources.  Planting a species suited to the location and at the right time of year will help to ensure success.

We advocate for planting native species that have survived thousands of years of the climate conditions, pests, and diseases found in our region, making them more likely to thrive with minimal intervention. They provide the food and shelter that local wildlife has come to depend on; and they exhibit the beautiful foliage, flowers, and bark you are familiar with seeing in your landscape.  We are also open to planting long-naturalized species that demonstrate ecological value.

We make species recommendations that are suitable to your landscape and are likely to be available in local nurseries.  We vet plant stock in the late Fall and again in January for plantings in the Winter and early Spring.  This timing gives most species the strongest possible chance for survival through our hot summers.

Let it grow: life thrives at the edges

As the least resource-intensive mechanism for growing your canopy, we encourage a forestry approach: natural regeneration.

We are fortunate in our area to have a strong urban forest winding through our cities, with mature trees of diverse species contributing seed.  Our soils stand ready to carry on the genetics of the stand.  By allowing parts of your property to grown unimpeded, you can activate what is often called a forester’s “Plan B.”

If you have an existing natural area on your property, or bordering your property, we can help you identify the present species in their mature and sapling forms.  By working with the process of natural succession, you can over time cull the growth of exotic invasive and early successional species to favor the development of native hardwoods.
